Ernest Browne

Ernest de sylly Hamilton Browne ( born July 11, 1855 in England, † April 13, 1946 in Cheltenham ) was an Irish lawyer and tennis player.

Browne was born in 1855 as a noble son of Major George Browne and his wife, Susan, Mary and later attended the Cheltenham College. From 1882 to 1885 he took part at the Wimbledon Championships, and reached the semi-finals there in 1885, which he lost to Ernest Renshaw. In 1882 he won the Irish Championships in individual and 1882-83 in the mixed doubles. In addition, he won the title at the Scottish Championships in 1889-91. In 1885 he married Ellen Augusta Ramsay. Later he worked as a judge in the King's County in Ireland.

Browne was a close friend of the brothers Ernest and William Renshaw. He died in 1946 in Cheltenham, in the county of Gloucestershire.
