The ninth edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1885 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road instead.

In the preparation of the tournament plan an innovation was applied. While byes were distributed to the various rounds up to the semi-finals in earlier years, one sat now a one of RB Bagnall Wild 1883 proposed system after byes could occur only in the first round. These were filled on the number of participants up to the next power of two with byes.

Men's Singles

In the men alongside defending champion William Renshaw came to 23 players in the All- Comers Contest. The All- Comers - final was won by Herbert Lawford against Ernest Renshaw. In the Challenge Round, however, Lawford lost to William Renshaw in five sets, the so celebrated his fifth consecutive title. In the Challenge Round was recorded with about 3,500 spectators, a record number of visitors.

In a game of Ernest de SH Browne, one of the most successful players this year, there was a controversy after Browne had alluded to the foot of the referee and the ball then came up in the opponent's box. The referee chair was positioned in the sequence at a greater distance from the grid.

Women's Singles

The field in the women's singles, which was held this year even without Challenge Round, included ten players. In the final, last year's winner Maud Watson was able to defend against Blanche Bingley her title in straight sets.

Men's doubles

In the doubles final again won the Renshaw brothers against Ferrer and Claude Arthur Stanley 6:3, 6:3 and 10:8.
