The 20th edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1896 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road instead. With 31 players so many signed up for the men as since 1881 no more. After the tournament the previous year, many players were not taken up to their games in the first or second round, a badge of honor was introduced, which was awarded to players after a defeat in one of these rounds.

Men's Singles

Harold Mahony was after he had Wilberforce Eaves beaten in the All- Comers final, decide the Challenge Round against last year's winner Wilfred Baddeley for themselves. It was Mahony's single title at Wimbledon.

Women's Singles

In the women's Charlotte Cooper defended her title in the Challenge Round against Alice Pickering in two sets.

Men's doubles

The brothers Wilfred and Herbert Baddeley won their fourth and final doubles title. In the Challenge Round they brought against Reginald Doherty and Harold Nisbet on a 0:2 set residue and finally won with 1:6, 3:6, 6:4, 6:1 and 6:1.
