Ernst Flechsig

Ernst Flechsig ( born October 5, 1852 in Bad Elster, † October 11, 1890 ) was a German chemist and chess master.

Life

Flechsig was born the son of a doctor. He attended the humanist Thomas School in Leipzig.

From 1874, he studied chemistry and natural sciences at the University of Leipzig. In 1878 he was at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg, Dr. phil. doctorate. After that, he was an assistant at animal Chemical Institute of Agricultural Academy in Proskau and from 1887 on animal Chemical Institute of the University of Breslau. He then became a member of the Portland Cement factory in Westphalia. Then he became a chemist in the Sohllederfabrik the Knoch family in Hirschberg.

As a chess player, he finished 1876 ranked second behind Wilfried Paulsen at the 10th Congress of the West German Chess Federation in Dusseldorf, 1877 10th in the 3rd Congress of the Middle German Chess Federation (winner: Louis Paulsen ) and in 1879 the 8th Place at the 1st Congress of the DSB (winner: Berthold English ). Against Fritz Riemann He played 1885 in Breslau, a match which ended in a draw ( 5:5 ). His best historical Elo rating was 2544 ( February 1886 ). In January 1880 he took the 20th place of the subsequently calculated Chess World Ranking.

Flechsig became ill with pleurisy and died in 1890 in the family home in Bad Elster.
