Ernst Morgenthaler

Ernst Morgenthaler ( born December 11, 1887 in Kleindietwil, † September 7, 1962 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter and graphic artist.

Life

Ernst Morgenthaler was born 1887 in Kleindietwil. 1897 the family moved to Bern, where he attended high school. His activities as a merchant did not fill him out, so he to compensate the music and turned to drawing. He took drawing lessons with various teachers and continued their education finally on the Oschwand in oil painting. There he also met his wife Sasha von Sinner, whom he married in 1916.

In Munich, where he continued formed, he took full advantage of his acquaintance with Paul Klee. After his return, he lived in various places in Switzerland, in 1923, finally in Küsnacht. Since 1920, his increasing fame led to a variety of exhibitions. Other suggestions received by the painter to move his family to the vicinity of Paris (1928 ) and by several travels, especially in North Africa. 1931 the family moved back to Switzerland (after Zurich - Hoengg ). Under Morgenthaler's friendly relations with fellow painters, musicians and writers is especially the highlight to Hermann Hesse. In March 1922, the writer Robert Walser was eight day guest of Morgenthaler family in Wollishofen.

From 1951 to 1953 he served as President of the Swiss Federal Art Commission. 1957 sat back a flurry of travel. In Sardinia, he obtained a residence for his family. Ernst Morgenthaler died in 1962 in Zurich.

In addition to oil paintings, watercolor paintings, wall paintings and drawings belongs to his work, a series of his own writings.

One of his children has been internationally known as the doctor, painter, juggler, psychoanalyst and author Fritz Morgenthaler ( 1919-1984 ). His second son, Nicholas Morgenthaler, was an architect. This was a partner in the internationally renowned architectural firm Atelier 5, taught at various universities in the U.S. and was director of the School of Applied Arts in Basel.
