Erwin Kalser

Erwin Kals (born 22 February 1883 in Berlin, † March 26, 1958 ibid; native Erwin Kalisz ) was a German actor and theater director.

Life

He studied at the University of Berlin and was there in 1907 due to a work on Conrad Ferdinand Meyer in his relationship with the Italian Renaissance to the Dr. phil. doctorate. In 1907 he took part in as an actor Emil Geyer Mark Brandenburg traveling theater. In 1911 he began his career at the Munich Chamber matches, where he remained until 1922. Among his roles was 1917, the cashier in the premiere of Georg Kaiser's From morning to midnight. In 1918 he took over the title role in The Lone Johst and 1920 in The King, 1920, he played the poet in Sorge's The Beggar.

In 1922 he moved to Berlin. Here he first played at the State Theatre and from 1926 under Erwin Piscator at the Volksbühne Berlin and at the theater at Nollendorfplatz. Important roles here have included 1926, the colonel in the premiere of Paquets storm surge, 1927, the Czar in the premiere of Tolstoy's Rasputin ( with Tilla Durieux ) and its participation in the premiere of Mehring's The Merchant of Berlin. He worked as a director a few times. Occasionally and in the sound film era was increasingly Kals front of the camera.

In 1933 he emigrated to Switzerland and worked at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. Here he was seen in 1936 as the old rabbi in Else Lasker -Schüler ARTHUR, and in 1939 he staged Wilder's Our Town.

Since 1939 he lived in Hollywood and worked here in several film productions in which he portrayed older, sophisticated man. Several times he played a doctor or Red Cross representatives as listed in Billy Wilder's Stalag 17, where he examined as such housing American prisoners of war in German camps.

From 1946 to 1951 was Kals again at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich on the stage, in 1952 he returned to Germany. Until his death he was a member of the ensemble of the National Theatre Theatres in Berlin. At the Schiller Theatre and at Schlossparktheater he was bearing age roles such as Shrewsbury, Mary Stuart (1952 ), Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos ( 1955), Arnolphe in Molière's The School for Wives (1955), Philemon in Ahlsens Philemon and Baucis, Polonius in Hamlet ( 1957), Kaiser Cathy of Heilbronn ( 1957) and the title role in Nathan the Wise ( 1957).

Kals was married to the screenwriter Irma von Cube. His son was the producer and director Konstantin Kals.
