Erythemis vesiculosa

The Erythemis vesiculosa is a dragonfly of the genus Erythemis of the subfamily Sympetrinae. Their range extends from the southern U.S. throughout Central and South America.

Construction of Imago

The animal reaches a length of 55 to 65 millimeters, with 40 to 48 mm of which attributable to the abdomen. The hind wings are between 38 millimeters and 45 millimeters long. This relatively large dragonfly has gray or brown compound eyes and a bright green thorax. The legs are the body also greenish downwards but increasingly black. The wings are transparent and have a green Pterostigma in young animals. And the abdomen is predominantly green, wherein the segments are swollen one to three, and the segments have four to seven dark circles. The segments eight to ten are black. The cerci are bright yellow or green.

Construction of the larva

The roundish eyes are located at lower side of the head and the abdomen ends rather blunt. The pair of side plates ( Ventrolateralplatten ) of the eleventh abdominal segment, the so-called Paraproct are strongly bent at the tip. At the ninth segment, it has tiny spines. The larva is hairless except for the prothorax. The head is longer than the chest, wherein the lower jaw four notches are provided. The molar tooth formula (2-4 ), but always without molar dam. The third segment of the antenna is the longest. The pair of side plates ( Ventrolateralplatten ) of the eleventh abdominal segment, the so-called Paraproct are smooth seen from the side.
