Eschnerberg

Eschnerberg, also Eschnerberg, Schellenberg, is up to 698 m above sea level. M. ( Klocker at Hinterschellenberg ) high mountain ridge in the Alpine Rhine Valley, on the border of Liechtenstein to Austria's Vorarlberg in Feldkirch.

Geography

The larger, southern part of the mountain is located in the lower Liechtenstein, the smaller northern part is located in the district of Feldkirch, Vorarlberg region there called the Oberland. The elevation is approximately seven kilometers long and two kilometers wide and extends along the Rhine.

At and on its slopes are south on Liechtenstein territory the towns Eschen, Mauren, Gamprin, Ruggell and Schellenberg, and north and northeast on Austrian territory the districts Fresch ( Nofels ) and Tosters the nearby town of Feldkirch. The highest point is located near rear -Schellenberg, on Liechtenstein territory.

Geology and classification

The Schellenberg is a sunken, formed by former Rhine glacier island mountain which forms the continuation of the Walser comb. He belongs to the Vorarlberg flysch -called unity of Rhenodanubian flysch zone of the Alps, which also builds parts of the Bregenzerwald Mountains - geological and orographic, along the Esch channel, the mountain belongs to this mountain range, but is expected by definition of the Alpine Club Classification (AVE 1984) for Rätikon, because it is located south of the River Ill ( Flyschschollen but can also be quite on the adjacent west foot of the Three Sisters ).

Cultural History

He is one of the oldest settlement sites in the Rhine Valley ( Rössen culture of the Middle Neolithic period around 4400 BC) finds from the excavation site near the homonymous municipality Borscht Schellenberg prove this.

The mountain was due to the domination of the Schellenberger its new name (see also rule Schellenberg ), but the historical name Eschnerberg is by the Liechtenstein citizens still used often and with pleasure.
