Esparron-de-Verdon

Esparron -de -Verdon is a commune with 425 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Alpes- de -Haute -Provence, Provence -Alpes- Côte d' Azur region.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Regional Natural Park Verdon, Lac d' Esparron, a reservoir of the river Verdon. The lake lies at an altitude of 359 meters, has an area of 3.28 km ² and holds 80 million m3 of water. The greatest depth is 55 meters.

The neighboring municipalities are in the north of Saint- Martin -de- Brômes and Allemagne -en- Provence, in the east Montagnac- Montpezat, in the southwest of Saint- Laurent- du- Verdon, in the south and west Quinson Saint- Julien- le- Montagnier.

History

In the municipality there are remnants, which are evidence of a settlement in the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. The community as such first appears on records in the years 1046-1066, under different names: castrum saving Ronis, Sparro, Esparro, Sparonum. Location mistress was 990-1259 Abbey Lérins. 1262 the castle of King Charles of Anjou was taken. During the French Revolution the castle, then the de Castellane family belonged, was expropriated and sold as national property. Buyer was a friend of the family, who purchased it for the previous owners back. Since the French Revolution is a patriotic society in the place.

In 1973, merged with the municipality Esparron Albiosc that has a village from the 12th century.

Economy

The village has a cooperative to lavender distillation. Otherwise, tourism plays an economic role. The lake offers various facilities for water sports and the scenery is interesting for hikers.

Attractions

The still inhabited castle has a dungeon from the 13th century, which is classified as a monument historique.

As the river downstream resort Gréoux -les- Bains is Esparron -de -Verdon a partnership with the spa town of Bad Krozingen in Baden- Württemberg received.
