Étampes

Etampes is a commune with 24,013 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Essonne in the Ile- de -France region; it belongs to the district Etampes and is the administrative seat of ten cantons. Etampes is located approximately 49 kilometers south of Paris and 60 kilometers north of Orléans. The city is crossed by the river Juine.

History

Etampes was in the Middle Ages the main town of the county of Etampes. 1514 was granted by the king the right to choose its own city council and to build a " maison commune" of the city.
