Étienne Vacherot

Étienne Vacherot ( born July 29, 1809 in Torcenay at Langres, Haute -Marne Dépt; . † July 28, 1897 in Paris) was a French philosopher.

Vacherot attended the École normale supérieure and then got a job as a teacher of philosophy at various institutions. In 1837 he was promoted to Director of Studies and Maître de conférences and took over the management as such on one École normale supérieure. Two years later he was appointed also as the successor of his teacher Victor Cousin as a professor of philosophy at the Sorbonne.

During these years Vacherot began to publish his "Histoire critique de l' école d' Alexandrie ". The Académie française considered this work to be so important that they distinguished it with a price. This work has been highly controversial and as then even Abbé Gratry polemic against Vacherot, this publication was apparently close to a ban.

His liberal attitude because he was suspended in 1849 at the instigation of the clerical and lost his position as headmaster. As in 1852, the Second Empire was proclaimed refused Vacherot Napoléon III. allegiance and thus also lost his job at the Sorbonne. 1859 Vacherot published his " La démocratie " and was sentenced to three months in prison for this book.

1868 took him to the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in as a member. From 1870, he served as mayor of the fifth arrondissement in Paris and performed during the siege and the uprising of the Commune useful services. These factors have been honored that Vacherot sent as a representative of Paris in the National Assembly on February 8, 1871. There he joined Although the Left joined, but in 1873 dropped out of the Republican Party and the Ministry Albert de Broglie and his ultramontane efforts supported, even voted for the clerical education law. He was therefore not elected again in 1876.
