Études-Tableaux

The Études - Tableaux ( Picture Etudes ) is a body set up by Sergei Rachmaninoff genus, when it comes to the fusion of the concert etude with technical and virtuosic effect full component with the tone poem for piano. The composer has indeed waived programmatic indications or subtitles, perhaps out of a desire to provide the imagination of artists and listeners forever to the test, but when Sergei Koussevitzky proposed to cede some of the pieces Respighi to orchestrate, Rachmaninoff agreed like a and revealed Respighi in a letter a few secrets of his inspiration:

Respighi overwrote the works according to "The Sea and the Seagulls " ( Op 39 /2), " The Fair " (op 33/7 ), " Funeral March " ( Op 39 /7), " Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf" (op 39 / 6), " march" ( Op 39 /9).

The 17 etudes are divided into two cycles:

  • 8 Etudes Tableaux, Op - 33 were originally planned 9 Etudes in single publication. However, the numbers 3-5 did not appear in the first edition in 1914 the publisher Gutheil. Number 4 was then used by Rachmaninov as Op 39/6. Number 3 and 5 were found in 1947 and published in 1948 by the Russian State Publishing. Since 1969 Boosey & Hawkes as Gutheil- successors Etudes Op 33 out including the numbers 3 and 5. The counting of the publisher corresponds to the originally planned 9 Etudes, so that the 8 Etudes are referred to as op 33/1-3 and 5-9. Because op 33/4 was already published as Op 39/6. Occasionally, information in the opus number and counter to the counting of the publisher closed the gap so that the No. 5-9 to advance to 4-8. The count after the first publication as No. 1-6 ( corresponds to Nos. 1-2 and 6-9 of the official count ) is still occasionally encountered, as the missing two Etudes Nos. 3 and 5 are then passed as op posth. The retracted to Rachmaninov Etude op lifetime 33/3 contains at measure 20, a 9 -bar passage in Rachmaninoff symphonic orchestra of the slow movement of the Piano Concerto No. 4, Clause 39, reused.
