Eucladoceros ( ancient Greek Εὐκλαδοκέρας ( - ος ) eukladokeras ( -os ) = gutverzweigtes antlers formed from εὖ eu = good (Adv. ). Κλάδος klados = branch and κέρας keras, gene κέρατος keratos = horn) is an extinct genus of stag - Pliocene and Pleistocene. Particularly striking was the highly branched, highly complex antlers of this species.

Dissemination

Eucladoceros appeared during the first phases of glaciation in the late Pliocene the first time in Europe, where he survived to the early Pleistocene, and apparently from the giant deer ( Megaloceros ) was replaced.

The impressive deer came in Europe and Central Asia from Portugal to the Amur region, western China and Khabarovsk in the Pacific Ocean off.

First finds of Eucladoceros ctenoides and Eucladoceros dicranios of 1841 in Ceyssaguet (near Lavoûte -sur -Loire north of Le Puy -en -Velay ) Go to the Italian researchers Nesti Filippo ( 1780-1847 ) of Florence back, a scientific colleague of Georges Cuvier, another is in the Issoiretal west of Clermont -Ferrand.

Appearance

Its head -body length was 2.50 m, the shoulder height 1.80 m, the antler span 1.70 m. He was a little smaller than Megaloceros giganteus and today's elk. Eucladoceros dicranios had, as its name suggests, a special form antlers. Average twelve long slightly curved ends adorned each antler, which looked very similar to a branched tree branch.

The type Eucladoceros ctenoides, formerly called after the site Tegelen in the Dutch province of Limburg Eucladoceros teguliensis, on the other hand had two large, upward and inward bent main ends, came off of the " main antler ", which was the third prime, which in turn contributed an additional side end. With the small side ends and ends twelve came together. Similarly, the species Eucladoceros senezensis, named after the archaeological site Senèze, a hamlet near Brioude (Haute -Loire, France).

So far, the following types are known:

  • Eucladoceros boulei ( Marcellin Boule, 1928; absolutely not secured )
  • Eucladoceros ctenoides, formerly Eucladoceros teguliensis (F. Nesti, 1841 Tegelen (Zeeland) )
  • Eucladoceros dichotomus (not fully guaranteed )
  • Eucladoceros dicranios ( Filippo Nesti, 1841 Ceyssaguet (Haute -Loire, France) )
  • Eucladoceros senezensis (Charles Depéret, 1910, Senèze (Haute- Loire) )
  • Eucladoceros tetraceros (Sir Wm Boyd Dawkins, 1878, Sárbogárd (Hungary ) )
