Eugen Bamberger

Eugen Bamberger, ( born July 19, 1857 in Berlin, † December 10, 1932 in Ponte Tresa, Switzerland ) was a German chemist who discovered the eponymous Bamberger rearrangement.

Life

Bamberger studied from 1875 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Berlin, but soon moved to the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg and studied natural sciences. From 1876 to 1880 he studied chemistry in Berlin, where he received his doctorate in 1880 and then in Charlottenburg with Karl Friedrich Rammelsberg and since 1883 in Munich under Adolf von Baeyer, where he held assistantships. He habilitated in 1891 and became an associate professor at the Ludwig -Maximilians- University of Munich. In 1893 he was appointed professor of general chemistry at the Polytechnic in Zurich (today ETH), where he held a lively research and teaching activities unfolded. He was talking in front of a friendly relationship to his pupil Felix Hoffmann, as well as Carl Duisberg, the research director of the dye works. Friedr. Bayer & Co. in Elberfeld.

A treacherous nervous disorders, which limited apart from strong headaches and the use of the right arm, forcing him to give up the chair in 1905, but he continued the research with restrictions continued. In a small laboratory he had with the help of a private wizard continued his scientific work. As even this limited scientific work was impossible to Bamberger attracted more and more back to Ticino, where he died in Ponte Tresa, 1932.

Bamberger was in 1888 married to Rosalie Karoline Marie Sertorius.

Bamberger's research on the chemical reaction

Bamberger has published about 430 scientific papers. His main interest was the chemical process itself, the reaction mechanism of complex reactions and their decomposition into individual phases. So a chemical reaction named after him under the Bamberger rearrangement refers to a chemical reaction that is used in the synthesis of para- hydroxyaniline derivatives from phenylhydroxyl derivatives in the presence of strong aqueous acids.
