Evaristo Carazo

Evaristo Carazo Aranda (* 1822 in Cartago, Costa Rica; † August 1, 1889 in Managua, Nicaragua ) was a Nicaraguan politician of the Conservative Party from 1887 to 1889 and President of the country.

There are alternative information both about his date of birth as his birthplace. The Ministry of Education of Nicaragua Rivas mentioned as a possible place of birth.

Carazo died on 1 August 1889 in performance of his duties. His official duties were taken over on an interim basis by Nicolás Osorno. Thereafter, the National Assembly appointed the Senator Roberto Sacasa as his successor, the first ended the tenure Carazos and was subsequently re-elected President.

Carazo took part in the defense of Rivas against William Walker. During his reign he promoted the public school system of the country in continuing the work of his predecessor Adán Cárdenas. In this context, includes his support of the University of León.

In the economic field, he promoted the cultivation of coffee and cattle. He let add the river port of El Rama. Carazo founded 1888, the Banco de Nicaragua and the Banco Mercantil de León.

The department of Carazo bears his name.
