Evelyn Nelson (mathematician)

Evelyn Merle Roden Nelson ( born November 25, 1943 in Hamilton ( Ontario) as Evelyn Merle Roden; † August 1, 1987 ibid ) was a Canadian mathematician, dealing with algebra (universal algebra) including applications dealt in computer science.

Nelson was the daughter of Russian immigrants, and studied at the University of Toronto and McMaster University with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and a master's degree in 1967 (Finite Ness of semi- groups of operators in universal algebra, Canadian J. Math ). In 1970, she received her doctorate in Günther Bruns (The lattice of equational classes of commutative semi- groups). Then she researched further at McMaster University, where she was an Associate Professor in 1978 and Professor in 1983. 1982 to 1984 she headed the faculty of computer science. After they've had to give up due to illness the management of the faculty, she died in 1987 from cancer.

The warrior - Nelson Prize for Women in Mathematics in Canada is named after her and Cecilia Krieger.
