Fabric Synagogue

Synagogue in the factory town

The synagogue in the factory town (Romanian Sinagoga Maura din Fabric, Marea SINAGOGA ) is a listed historic building, a former synagogue in the Strada Ion Luca Caragiale No. 2 in the second district Fabric ( German factory town ) of the western Romanian city of Timisoara.

History

The year of manufacture of the first used as a synagogue building at this point is disputed, some sources date the construction to the year 1838, others to 1841., The synagogue was founded in 1870, when the local Jewish community of faith " status quo ante " of the Hungarian and Transylvanian Jewry joined. After 1879, the community turned to the Neolog Judaism.

The community grew, and it was decided to build a new church. The financing of the new synagogue took place through collections in the community, through a public lottery, as well as through individual donations.

The synagogue was founded in 1899 by the architect Leopold tree Horn (Hungarian Lipót tree horn) from Budapest built. The building was designed by the local architect Josef Kremmer. The new building matched the style of contemporary Reformed synagogues in the Austro -Hungarian Empire and is similar to the synagogues of Rijeka, Szolnok and Zrenjanin, which were built as well as the synagogues in Braşov and Szeged designed by the same architect. The inauguration took place on 3 September 1899 in the presence of the Head of the church, Alex Kohn, and the then mayor of Timişoara, Karl Telbisz instead.

The synagogue was closed at the end of the communist era in 1985, as the community was conditionally contracted sharply after the Second World War by the emigration of the majority of the resident Jews to Israel. The Jewish population was at 13,600 after the war, but in 1971 was dropped to 3000. In 1998 she was estimated to be about 900 members. Since its closure, the synagogue was repeatedly devastated by vandals and stolen artifacts. Due to the progressive deterioration of the building, there is now the danger of collapse.

In the absence of funds for the renovation turned the Jewish community in 2009, the building for 35 years the Romanian National Theatre of Timişoara (Romanian Teatrul Naţional Timişoara) for performances are available. Condition for this is that the building is to be renovated within five years, and that there is no anti-Jewish, obscene, or in breach of human dignity theater productions are shown.

The organ was built in 1895 as Opus 16 by the organ builder Carl Leopold Wegenstein. The pneumatic instrument has two manuals, pedal and 13 stops. The tracker action and the design of the table is similar to the 1896 Millennium -made organ in St. Catherine's Church in the district Chetatea. Since a burglary in which the organ was around 2003 partially destroyed, it is no longer playable.
