Faroe Islands Cup

The Faroe Islands Football Cup ( Faroese Steypakappingin ) is the cup competition for football club teams of men and is played since 1955. Since 1999 he is called Løgmanssteypið ( " Cup of Løgmaður "). Thus, it is awarded by the Prime Minister of the country. The winner is entitled to participate in the qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

In addition to the National Cup, there are separate cup competitions of young people ( Th Dam & Co. Steypið ), Boys ( Blaðberasteypið ), little boy ( Cadbury steypið ), women from the 1st and 2nd league ( Steypakappingin kvinnur ), girls 14-17 ( Mótasteypið ) and little girls 12-14 ( Niels L. Arge steypið ).

Development

With the introduction of the Cup participation was initially only allows first division. In the first year was played with semi-finals and then finals, partly several qualifying matches were in the following years, rather than the semi-finals held to determine the two finalists. From 1958 to 1964 KÍ Klaksvík renounced participation respectively. Between 1974 and 1978, two final games were played. As of 1976, there was again a solid semi-final with four teams since 1978, these matches will be played with return game. 1979 took the first time, all second - and third-tier to the Cup finals in part, since 1980 also the fourth division. This involved until 1982 in addition to the A- and the B -, C-, and D- teams represented in each league clubs, which the participants playing off initially for the next round, the higher class teams in the competition got in later. Since 1983, A- Teams are only allowed for the trophy.

As of 1995, a group stage was held after the first round yet. Here, qualified from four groups, each with four teams in home and away matches against every other team the first and second position in their group for the next round. In 1998, the group number was reduced to three, with additional qualifications, in addition to the first and second place, the two best third-placed for the next round. In 2005, the group phase was abolished due to the expansion to 27 game days in the first division.

The finals were held from 1979 to 2009 in Gundadalur Stadium in Tórshavn on artificial turf. Exception here was the period from 2000 to 2005 during which the finals were held in the Tórsvøllur Stadium in Tórshavn on natural grass. 2010 and 2011 found the playoffs in the injector Arena in Klaksvík place, 2012 will be played back in Tórsvøllur Stadium. In the finale to 1996 a replay was recognized to the extent it (until 1989 ) and a 30- minute extension was tied after 90 minutes. From 2001 to 2005, the final was held at each Ólavsøka, the national holiday of the Faroe Islands, instead, after that only once in 2009.

Current mode

The Cup will be played in pure knockout system. With currently 19 participating teams in the A- 14 four Faroese leagues are directly qualified for the knockout stages, including all first and second division of each season. The remaining third and fourth division play one another from the remaining two participants for the knockout stages. Here and in all following rounds will be drawn wild, that is, without any seedings. Unterklassige teams enjoy no automatic right home in the encounters. Up to the semifinals, which will be held with return game and in which the away goals rule is applied, all the games are decided in a single game. Is it tied after 90 minutes, following a 30-minute extension. If then still no decision should be brought about, followed by a penalty shootout.

The winner is entitled to participate in the 2nd qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. Should this be the Faroese champions in the same year, instead participates in the Cup finalist at the first qualifying round.

Worth mentioning

  • From 1984 to 2004, the Cup was either HB Tórshavn or from the team that could defeat HB in a given year, won. The only exception here was the year 1994, in which B71 Sandur HB from the competition threw in the final but KÍ Klaksvík subject.
  • From 1968 to 1973 and from 1978 to 1982 HB Tórshavn won the Cup five times in a row.
  • Until now, with NSÍ Runavík (1980 ), Royn Hvalba (1983) and ÍF Fuglafjørður (1987 ) three second division in the final, but won none of them, so far only first division team were victorious.
  • Four teams were at least once in the cup final, but could never win the cup. ÍF Fuglafjørður here is the team with the most losses in any single win, they lost a total of five times in the final.
  • The highest final victory achieved in 1971 HB Tórshavn against TB Tvøroyri with a 9:0. The largest margin of victory in the Cup competition at all is also from HB Tórshavn that the fourth division Skansin Torshavn defeated in the group in 1995 with 22:0.
