Feast of Saints Peter and Paul

St. Peter and St. Paul ( St. Peter and St. Paul ) is a day of remembrance of the traditional anniversary of the death of the Apostles and Church Fathers Simon Peter, Paul of Tarsus. It is celebrated the festival on June 29.

The day is a Catholic feast, which can be traced back to early Christianity of the first half of the 4th century. In the Orthodox and Protestant Churches the feast is celebrated, and in some parts of the day is a public holiday.

Holiday

In Prussia, Peter and Paul was a public holiday in December 1796, an arrangement of Frederick William III. abolished. In other German states, the holiday remained until the 19th century.

In the Swiss canton of Ticino, in some Italian-speaking municipalities in the canton of Grisons, and in some municipalities in the canton of Lucerne Peter and Paul is a statutory holiday.

June 29 was committed to 1976 in Italy as (legal ) holiday. In 1977, he was abolished and remained nurmehr in the municipality of Rome a holiday. The " apostles " Peter and Paul, the city's patron saints of Rome, the episcopal city of the Pope; the basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Peter's Cathedral are considered their grave churches.

In Italy in 2008 a bill was introduced into Parliament providing for the reintroduction of the Peter- and -Paul- day on June 29 as a legal holiday in Italy. Prime Minister Romano Prodi and many bishops and cardinals supported this project. The decision lay with the Vatican. Also in the new legislature from April 2008 with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the bill for the re-introduction of the Peter and Paul Day was introduced as a public holiday in Italy again in House and Senate. Customs

The Peter- and-Paul's feast is celebrated especially in Austria and Bavaria traditionally associated with the Peterlfeuer. In parallel to this day are held ordinations in many Catholic dioceses.

Even in the Protestant Church, the feast is celebrated on 29 June, but it is relegated to the background in the minds of many evangelical churches. However, the orders of worship of the Protestant Churches in Germany see this holiday currently.

The Orthodox Church has from the octave of Pentecost until the day Peter and Paul a Lent, the Apostles fasting. This fasting is less strict than the other fasts of the Orthodox.

Numerous churches ( St. Peter and Paul Church ) bear the patronal feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Among the best known are the cathedral and parish church of Sts. Peter and Paul, short Klagenfurt Cathedral, and the Cathedral in Poznan ( Poznań). A Peter and Paul Altar stands in Comburg.

A number of monasteries were dedicated to the apostles by name, including the Hirsau. → Peter and Paul Monastery.
