Federico Mayor Zaragoza

Federico Mayor Zaragoza ( born January 27, 1934 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish biologist and politician, he was Director-General of UNESCO on 15 November 1987 to 1999. Currently he is the Head of the Culture of Peace Foundation in Spain.

Life

Scientific career

Mayor graduated with a degree in biochemistry at the University Complutense of Madrid. He taught at the universities of Granada and Madrid, he was rector of the University of Granada (1968-1972) and co-founder of molecular biology center. In particular, because of his work on brain metabolism in Newborn Mayor is an internationally renowned biochemist and molecular biologist.

Political action

Mayor in Spain was Secretary of State (1970-1976), Minister for Education and Science (1981-1982), member of the Spanish (1977) and the European Parliament (1987).
