Felicjan Kowarski

Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski (* 1890 in Starosielce in Białystok, † 1948 in Konstancin- Jeziorna near Warsaw ) was a Polish painter, sculptor and university teacher. He is known for his monumental and wall and ceiling paintings in Poland.

Life and work

From 1902 to 1908 he studied at the Art School in Odessa in Malfach. Subsequently, he studied from 1910 to 1918 painting at the Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Dmitri Nikolayevich Kardowski and 1918-1920 at the Art Academy in Munich. In 1920 he returned to Poland. At first he lived in Toruń. Here he conducted together with Leonard Pękalski the art studio " Sztuka " ( German: Art).

From 1923 to 1929 he was professor of the Chair of decorative and monumental painting at the Art Academy of Krakow. In Krakow, he became a member of the local art groups " Rytm " ( German: Rhythm ) " Pryzmat " ( German: prism) and " Jednoróg " ( German: unicorn ). From 1930 he took over the chair of easel painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

Kowarskis style leaned on to baroque and romantic art forms. Monumentalistische, in the form of disciplined language works were characteristic of his works, which were in connection with architectural motifs in the decoration or painting. He received several large orders for interior designing, as in the Krakow Wawel castle ( ceiling painting, 1925-1929 ), in the Jasna Gora Monastery ( Mural, 1928-1929 ) and the Polish pavilion at the world exhibition "Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne " in Paris in 1937 (ceiling painting). In easel painting certain landscapes and figure compositions his motives. In his "Cracow period " painted mainly landscapes Kowarski from the area around Ojców as the pictures " Dolina Będkowska " ( German: Będkowska Valley), " Krajobraz z Ojcowa " ( German: Landscape of Ojców ) and "O zachodzie " ( German: As the sun sets ).

Kowarski presented in Krakow, Lviv and Warsaw as well as several times in abroad ( Vienna, Venice, Paris, Berlin). The National Museum in Krakow, Poznan and Warsaw ( painting " Proletariatczycy ") and the National Bank of Poland have his paintings purchased. For his ceiling painting in Krakow Castle (Hall among birds ), he was awarded.

One of his Schülerinnenwar Zofia Matuszczyk - Cygańska. A student was Jan Betley.
