Felsőszölnök

Felsőszölnök [ fɛlʃø sølnøk ː ] ( German Oberzemming, Slovenian Gornji Senik ) is a town in Vas county in Hungary. The village has 683 inhabitants ( 90% of them belong to the Slovene minority in Hungary ). In Felsőszölnök is the seat of the regional self-government of the Hungarian Slovenes. The area of the municipality amounts to 23.56 km ².

Location

The village is located 10 km southwest Felsőszölnök Szentgotthárd and is located 2 km away from the Austrian and Slovenian state border.

History

Based on the Meier courts of the Cistercian abbey ( founded by King Béla III. ) The settlement was founded by the local Slovenes. The village was Felsőszölnök 1378 together with the neighboring community Alsószölnök ( Unterzemming ) was mentioned for the first time as Zelnuk Superior Inferior et documented. The village belonged to the large estates of Dobra (today Neuhaus in southern Burgenland) and was until the mid-19th century in the possession of the Batthyány family. The most famous person who brought forth the place, was a minister József Kossics (1788-1867), who was also active as a linguist, historian and folk customers researchers in addition to his pastoral duties. He wrote, for example, the first Slovenian landscape monograph in Hungary.
