Ferdinand Bol

Ferdinand Bo ( e) l (* 1616 in Dordrecht; † August 24, 1680 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter of biblical scenes and self-portraits.

Life

Bol was the son of a barber and was first taught by Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, his father Albert Cuyp, and continue with Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht. Then he moved to Amsterdam and became a pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn, both worked in the studio of Hendrick van Uylenburgh. Bol had by his first wife good relations with the Admiralty and got this multiple jobs. Bol became very wealthy when he, after his first wife died, married a rich widow. He lived on the Keizersgracht 672, in the house now houses the Museum van Loon. Bol has since produced little paintings. He managed the urban Leprosenhaus.

Bols etchings (about 17 ) are held in Rembrandt's manner. Some of his works were such that they were a long time attributed to Rembrandt. His works can be found at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (Rotterdam ) in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, in the Alte Pinakothek (Munich), in the Art Gallery in Tambov, at the National Gallery (London), the Louvre (Paris), in the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg ) and in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister ( Dresden).

The paintings Bols are rare to find on the art market, because they often are in private collections or in public buildings.
