Ferdinand Brokoff

Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff (also: Prokop, Czech: Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff ) ( born September 12, 1688 in Roth House, † March 8, 1731 in Prague) was a sculptor of the Baroque.

Origin

Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff came from a family of sculptors from George Berg ( Spišská Sobota ) in the County of Zips. His father Johann Brokoff came after his training in Regensburg on the move to Prague and started 1670 with a sculpture workshop independently, in which both sons (Michael Johann Brokoff and the younger by two years, Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff ) were active.

Education and work

Ferdinand was a pupil of his father and continued his education at the sculptor Andreas Quitainer continued. From 1707 he possessed the citizenship of Prague's Old Town and he worked in the family workshop. His influences in shaping his sculptural works were Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini and Matthias Bernard Braun.

Brokoff participated in 1707 with independent work on the sculptural decoration of the Charles Bridge. With this figure compositions he soon became known, and it was followed by large orders of Prague and the Bohemian nobility.

Significantly has been working with Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, according to the draft of which he created the Tomb of the Bohemian Obert Chancellor Johann Wenzel Wratislaw of Mitrowitz for Brokoff. In 1722 he was called by Fischer von Erlach to Breslau, where he received an order for the sculptural decoration of the cathedral orchestra was transferred. 1726, he worked again in Prague and among other things, created the Marian Column with the sculptures of the eight patron saints at Hradcany. In 1728 he acquired the citizenship of Prague's New Town. In the same year he produced in Vienna, the model for the stuccoed high altar of St. Charles Church.

1729 came a big order of the Cistercian monastery Grüssau in Silesia, which he led decoration of the church was under construction transmitted. There he worked on the models until 1730. After his early death, his pupil Anton Dorazil took over with a sculptor 's workshop from Prague the management and completion of the work.

Was buried Brokoff like his father and his brother Johann Michael on the no longer existing cemetery near the church of St. Martin in the Wall in Prague. Today, a plaque commemorates the church with the portrait of Ferdinand Maximilian to the family of sculptors.
