Fermoy

Fermoy ( Irish: Mainistir Fhear MAI) is a city in the northeast of the county Cork in the south of the Republic of Ireland, with 2,275 inhabitants ( 2006). It is located near the border with County Waterford at the foot of the Galtee Mountains on the Munster Blackwater, which is a popular fishing spot in the area.

The city's name comes from the Irish and refers to the Cistercian monastery of Fermoy Abbey, founded in the 12th century. To this monastery was built around the city.

The modern city was planned and built in 1791 by John Anderson. From Anderson comes also the postal system in Ireland. Him, a memorial stone was erected in 2001.

In Fermoy crosses the former N8, now R639, with the N72 from Dungarvan to Killarney. The main route between Portlaoise and Cork City is now the M8, which does not run through Fermoy.
