Ferragudo is a Portuguese parish ( " Freguesia " ) in a circle ( " concelho " ) of Lagoa in the Algarve.

Geography

Situated next to the open sea and opposite the town of Portimão in the estuary of the Arade river, the houses of the old fishing village of pushing up the hill.

History

Discoveries prove the settlement in prehistoric times, and later by Phoenicians, Romans and Kartagher. Since there is no meaningful documents a Moorish settlement comes the first record of the present site of the 14th century, is reported in the fishing colonizing about yourself.

Between 1502 and 1537 the Bishop of Silves built the castle. In the 18th century by fishing and agriculture further grown city from the community Estombar was dissolved and declared 1749 to be its own community. On 30 June 1999, the place in the rank of a small town ( " Vila " ) was charged.

Economy

Ferragudo was traditionally a fishing village. Beginning of the 20th century saw the place a boost by being moved fish canning factories. These have been over the years always unprofitable due to missing development and increasingly succeeded. Since the 1970s, then sat by the emergence of a tourism center on a rebound. The place is now living mainly from tourism and the employment of many of its inhabitants in nearby Portimão.
