Ferropolis

Ferropolis ( gr - lat. Ferromagnetic and polis " City of Steel " ) is a museum and venue near Graefenhainichen east of Dessau on a peninsula in the former mining Golpa -Nord. Ferro Polis is the anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH ).

History

Originally there were at this point the workshops, power generation facilities and buildings for the open cast mine Golpa -Nord.

Until 1955, joined a pit railway line mountain joke with the power plant Zschornewitz. Parts of the discontinued railway embankment were later used as access road for the lignite mining Golpa -Nord and later for the connection of ferro- polis. The mine train and present sidings for Ferropolis were built parallel to this former railway line.

After the end of the brown coal mining in this area here five large appliances have been brought together in an open air museum. Was on 14 December 1995 " Ferropolis - The City of Iron " was founded by the then Minister of Economic Affairs of Saxony -Anhalt Klaus Schucht. In addition to a bucket swing excavator (nicknamed "Mad Max" ) and a bucket-wheel excavator ( " Big Wheel" ) you will also find two spreaders ( "Gemini" and "Medusa" ) and a caterpillar pillar jib excavator ( " Mosquito" ). The connection to Ferropolis was renewed in 2005. In December 2005 Ferropolis was officially accepted into the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Since 22 April 2006, the registry office Graefenhainichen operates in the disused control room of the mine Golpa North an extension for weddings. Ferropolis can also be achieved with museum trains Zschornewitzer the former narrow-gauge railway.

Use

The unusual background was and is appreciated by many artists.
