Fettercairn distillery

Fettercairn is a whiskey distillery in Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

History

The distillery was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay and was the second official distillery license (the first went to Glenlivet ). There followed a number of changes of ownership. Among the owners was temporarily also the elder brother of Sir Thomas Gladstone of the then British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. After a fire the distillery 1887-1890 was built almost from scratch. In 1960, the own malting floors were closed and 1966 increased the number of stills from two to four. Since 1973 belongs to the distillery Whyte & Mackay, which was bought for £ 595 million of United Spirits Limited, a subsidiary of India's The UB Group in 2007.
