Fieldata

Data Fell was a project carried out by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the 1950s, computer project that would create standards for collecting and distributing information on a battlefield. In this sense it can be considered as a generalization of the system SAGE the U.S. Air Force, has been created about the same time.

In contrast to SAGE, the intention in Fell Data was much wider, but it should enable the collection of information from different sources and formats. An important part of the Fell Data Systems was the specification of the format that should have the data. The result was a set of characters that a great influence on the subsequent ASCII character set should have. Fell Data also defined message formats and even electrical standards in order to connect the machine with the Fell data properties.

Another part of the Fell Data project involved the design and interpretation of various types of computers, from data collection terminals on the one hand to comprehensive data processing centers on the other side. During the project, some of the Fiel Data -standard computers were built, eg the transportable MOBIDIC of Sylvania and BASICPAC and LOGICPAC of Philco. ARTOC, another device was designed for graphical output on slides, but was not completed.

Fell Data is the original character set of the computer 1100 Series of Univac, internally represented by a sixth of a 36 -bit word of these machines.

The Fell Data project lasted from 1956 to 1962, when it was stopped at reorganization measures.
