Fiji Meteorological Service

The Fiji Meteorological Service ( FMS) is the competent Meteorological Department of the Government of Fiji based in Nadi.

Since 1995 this weather service is also responsible for creating forecasts of tropical cyclones in a large part of the southern Pacific Ocean.

Function and organization

Forecast Services Division (FS )

Today, the FMS creates special weather warnings for neighboring island groups such as Samoa and Vanuatu. Daily weather forecasts are made four times a day for the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Wallis and Futuna.

Nadi Tropical Cyclone - Centre ( RSMC Nadi )

By resolution of the 47th session of the World Meteorological Organization was the headquarters of the Meteorological Service in Nadi one of six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres ( RSMC ) for the global surveillance of tropical activity. The area of ​​responsibility of the RSMC Nadi is the Pacific Ocean south of the Equator to the 25th Latitude within the 160 degree east and 120 degree west longitude. The Office are two overviews daily tropical disturbances in this area out at 11:00 clock and 23:00 UTC clock. Weather warnings for deep sea weather will be issued, if necessary four times daily ( 01:15, 07:15, 13:15 and 19:15 UTC clock ). Notes on tropical storms are also created in the six- hour interval and include the current location of tropical cyclones as well as predictions about the expected cyclone track. In this task, the RSMC is supported by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu.
