History and music style

Filth appeared after the first EP Swans, whose only occupation bandleader Michael Gira and drummer Jonathan Kane remained. While the EP was still completely caught up in the style of No Wave, Filth marked the transition to power rock and noise rock, which was to dominate the following publications of the Swans. The second drummer Roli Mosimann and guitarist Norman Westberg ( still a solid Swans Member) helped the album a percussion and guitar -driven sound.

The texts thematize themselves or other -inflicted violence, and mental and physical exercise of power.

On later CD releases of Filth only was the debut EP, later added in place of the existing EP of live and demo recordings compilation album Body to Body, Job to Job as a bonus.

Reviews

Despite the certified musical originality was and is not without controversy Filth:

Ned Ragget awarded on Allmusic three out of five stars on the album:

" [ ... ] With every half- barked, half waxed rare line of text Gira sounds as if he would tear his throat his soul [ ... ] at the end towards the whole thing is a bit too much. In small doses, however, it is great, and the early Swans are truly unlike many on this planet, whether before or after. "

Mark Weddle summed up on Brainwashed.com given the re-release:

" [ ... ] Swans always had the potential for brutal, acoustic attacks, but particularly this era concentrated on an uncompromising, nothing in return receiving sledgehammer sound. [ ... ] All in all, it's a big, brutal, intense, slow, mutated strain of punk rock that was all their own, at least until they all started to copy. [ ... ] It's a bit more challenging to hear it [ ... ] but on days when you get a speeding ticket, doing your tax, hate your job, your significant other leaves you or you just detest everything ... , this is the music to your personal movie.
