Background of the fragments

As the owner of the Rawlinson and Bosworth Chair of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University, Tolkien held 1928-1937 six different lectures that dealt with the subject of Finn and Hengest. These were: The fight at the Finn Castle and the Finn Episode (1928 ), Finn and Hengest: the Problem of the episode in Beowulf (1930 ), Finn and Hengest: the Fragment and the Episode (1931 ) The fight at Finn Castle (1934 ) and Finn and Hengest (1935, 1937). For 1939, a further series of lectures was announced that had to be canceled, however, due to the outbreak of the Second World War. 1963, however, when Tolkien briefly his successor CL Wrenn represented at the university, he took the opportunity and gave the lectures announced for 1939.
