On Fairy- stories

The chapter begins with the words:

" I PROPOSE to speak about fairy - stories, though I am aware thatthis is a rash adventure. Faerie is a perilous land, and in it are pitfalls for the unwary and dungeons for the overbold. And overbold I may be Accounted, for though I have been a lover of fairy - stories since I learned to read, and have at times thought about them, I have not Studied them professionally. I have been hardly more than a wandering explorer (or trespasser ) in the land, full of wonder but not of information. "

" I propose to talk about fairy tales, although I am aware that this is a daring adventure. Faerie is a dangerous country, in it there are pitfalls for the unwary and dungeons for the bold. And boldly I may well be, for though I am a lover of fairy stories since I learned to read, and I often thought about it, I 've never learned professional. I was hardly more than a wandering explorer (or intruder ) in the land, full of wonder but not full of information. "

Tolkien is concerned in the essay with the questions of what are actually fairy tales, what are their origins, and what purpose they serve. The latter he sees this as the most important of the three questions.

He first begins with the declaration of the fairy tale concept according to the Oxford English Dictionary. He writes about the different types of stories about fairies in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream as well as on Grimm's fairy tales or Welsh, Gaelic tales. The essay deals with the fairy-tale narrative as a form of literature and was originally written in Scotland for a lecture at the University of St Andrews. Tolkien wanted it also to show that fairy tales are not addressed exclusively to a childlike audience.
