Wolfgang Krege

Wolfgang Krege ( born 1 February 1939 in Berlin, † April 13, 2005 in Stuttgart ) was a German author and translator. He has worked for the Klett-Cotta Verlag in Stuttgart.

Life and work

Wolfgang Krege was born in Berlin, where he also grew up. Beginning of the 1960s, he began studying philosophy at the Free University of Berlin. He then worked as lexicon editor, copywriter and book editor. Since 1970 he has worked as a translator, said he first started with nonfiction.

Through his translation of J.R.R. Tolkien's book The Silmarillion, he became known in the 1970s to a wider audience. In the 1990s, he translated the hobbit new; compared to the previous translation by Walter Scherf, which most of the embedded in the action songs and poems had omitted or shortened, and also contained illustrations of become known as a children's book illustrator Klaus Ensikat, speaks Kreges version rather at an adult audience. Kreges New translation of the Lord of the Rings is very controversial among fans. The new German translation of 2000 attempted more than the old one ( by Margaret Carroux ) to reproduce the action between the various figures of greatly varying linguistic style also in German. In the old translation of the German style is fairly uniform throughout - temperate old-fashioned, according to some critics even artificially " folksy "; in the original find, however, levels of language expressed by " Bible " style of the 16th century through to rural and urban, partly rough everyday English of the 1940s, ie the time of writing.
