Fischland

The fish country is a land bridge on the southern Baltic coast of Mecklenburg Bay and part of the peninsula fish - darss. It belongs to the part of the country Mecklenburg, the Darß already belongs to Pomerania. The border runs along the border path in Ahrenshoop.

As a former island it is bounded by the navigable until the 14th century estuaries of Recknitz: In the south of Permin, in the north loop. More recently, the city Recknitzer meadows and the Rostock heath be taken as the most southern border. To the west and east boundaries are simple: on the one hand, the active cliff on the Baltic Sea, on the other hand lying just inches above sea coastline at Saal Bodden. The fish land is about 5 km long and between 500 m and 2 km wide and extends from southwest to northeast.

The Pleistocene island core, the major changes is subject to wind and water, is composed of glacial sands and boulder clay. It formed a compensation coast. It was not until the late 14th century the then remaining two connections between the Baltic Sea and Bodden were filled by the Hanseatic League, to impede the opponent Ribnitz access to the sea. This fish country and Darß been to the peninsula.

Even today wear storms on average half a meter per year on the coast of the fish from land to make it to the north of Darßer place to store again. Without costly coastal protection measures, the narrow land bridges were probably destroyed long since.

Near the steep bank Althagen / Niehagen the Bakelberg is. It is 17.9 m above sea level, the highest point on the fish country.

At the fish country are only four places that today largely merge into one another: the Ahrenshooper districts Althagen and Niehagen and Wustrow with the district Barnstorf. The well-known as a holiday and residence of artists village Ahrenshoop (before ) Pomeranian region does not lie on the fish country, but on the Vordarß. North is limited, the fish country today Grenzweg in the community Ahrenshoop. There formerly was the loop, where the border between Mecklenburg and Pomerania has been marked; this has been preserved to our time as the boundary between the Mecklenburg and Pomerania State Church.
