Bay of Mecklenburg

The Mecklenburg Bay is part of the south-western Baltic Sea and the largest German Baltic Sea bay. It is sharply demarcated by an imaginary line from the eastern tip of the island of Fehmarn ( Staberhuk ) in Schleswig -Holstein to the northern tip of the peninsula Darß ( Darßer place ) in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern.

Shipping

Navigational demanding and potentially dangerous for the riparian countries is the Kadet Channel lying between Gedser on Falster and Warnemünde or Darßer place, an international shipping route (Kiel Kiel and Lübeck- way Gedser - way ) with extremely high shipping traffic. The increase in traffic with old single-hull tankers under flags of convenience to and from the ports of the Baltic States increases the risk of an oil spill on the surrounding coasts.

Geographical breakdown

The southwestern and southern part of about 3500 km ² large bay is again divided: in the Bay of Lübeck, including the Neustadt Bay, the Bolton Bay and the Bay of Wismar. Some lagoons open to the Mecklenburg Bay ( salt lagoon, Pötenitzer Wiek, Zaufe ).

Islands

In the Mecklenburg Bay, the island of Poel and the smaller islands and whale Langenwerder lie.

Seaports

The largest port cities on the Gulf of Mecklenburg, the Hanseatic cities of Lübeck, Wismar and Rostock.
