FK RÄ«ga

FK Riga was a Latvian football club from the capital Riga, which, from 1999 to 2009, in which Virsliga, the top division of the country, represented a decade. Their home games was the first team in Latvijas Universitates stadium, which took 5,000 spectators from. After the 2008 season, the merged FK Riga with Riga Olimps to RFS / Olimps Riga.

History

The FK Riga was founded in 1999 in the wake of the establishment of the Latvian sports club SK Riga. This supports (among others) also top-flight teams in hockey (HK Riga 2000) and women's basketball (TTT Rīga ) in their youth work.

The FK Riga launched directly into the Virsliga and completed his first season in 1999 with the 6th place (for a total of 8 clubs ) from. That same year, the FK Riga reached the Cup final against the then league dominating city rivals Skonto Riga, which was won after a 1-1 draw after extra time in the penalty shootout. This opening win was the only title in the relatively short history of the club. Then the team played to qualify for the UEFA Cup, but failed already in the 1st round at Helsingborgs IF ( Sweden).

In the following years the FK Riga places occupied always in the back of the midfield and was sometimes even in danger of relegation, but managed to escape each time. 2006, the club was at the end of the season before last and had to play in the relegation against FK Valmiera. However, with two clear victories could avoid relegation.

A year later, Riga was then the surprise team of the season and finished at the end of the 3rd place, the FK to participate in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2008 entitled. Internationally, FK Riga was the following year, initially against ÍF Fylkir ( Iceland ) and Bohemians Dublin ( Ireland) to enforce, was defeated in the 3rd round but then IF Elfsborg from Sweden.

At the same time the club came at the beginning of the 2008 season due to urban austerity measures that are to be considered again as a consequence of the global financial crisis, financial difficulties. Towards the end of the season boycotted the team's league match at Liepaja Metalurgs in protest against the club leadership that had the players paid any salary for 3 months. After the game was scored 0-3 and the FK Riga the season in sixth place in the standings ( at 10 now instead of 8 clubs ) graduated, you had to sign up for insolvency in November 2008 and merged in a row with the Liga rivals JFK Olimps Riga, which then renamed RFS / Olimps Riga.
