Flag of Biafra

The flag of Biafra was the flag of the short-lived, recognized by few countries Republic of Biafra (1967-1970), which had split from Nigeria.

Description and significance

The flag consisted of a horizontal tricolor, ie from three strips of red, black and green color. Model was the Pan-African flag, which was designed in 1917 by Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association ( UNIA ).

In the center, black stripes of the flag of Biafra, there was a rising sun. The eleven rays of the sun represented eleven provinces of Biafra. The rising sun was already in the arms of the Nigerian Eastern Province, formed from the Biafra itself.

Others

The flag of Biafra was the model for the very similar flag of the short-lived Republic of Benin, which existed for a few days on the territory of Biafra.

The "half" sun within the flag was eponymous for the novel Half of the sun (English: Half of a Yellow Sun ) plays Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie from that just before and during the Biafran War.
