The family film The Flight of the Navigator is an American science fiction film directed by Randal Kleiser from the year 1986.

Action

The twelve- year-old David to pick up his little brother. To this end, he has to run through a forest. David sees an unusual luminous appearance. Curious, he wants to look at it and it falls down a slope where it is lying unconscious.

When he regains consciousness, he is running not realizing home. There, however, is now living a different, unfamiliar family. The distraught boy is handed over to the police, who eventually identifies him as the 1978 disappearance of David Scott Freeman. David thinks, however, that he was still in 1978, is located in that day, when he was overthrown in the forest. But in fact it is already 1986.

The police do the parents of David found and passes it to his family. The Freemans are glad wiederzuhaben him. But all wonder where David stayed in the past eight years and why he has not aged. Therefore, the local hospital, some studies are performed on him while suddenly schematic representations of a spaceship on the computer screens appear to be clearly emitted from David's brain.

This further, for the most part unintelligible information appears on the computers. David also can not do anything with this information. At night he is called by a voice that seeks the "Navigator".

David quickly realizes that he is being held captive by NASA. With the help of an employee he finally manages to escape. The voice led him to the spaceship, which is hidden in a hangar at the NASA site. The NASA it was not able to penetrate into the interior. But no sooner is David before, opens a hatch. He gets in, even before the guards can prevent this. The spaceship is flying out of the hangar and hiding from the radar initially in the sea.

The ship is equipped with a talking computer that David Max unceremoniously calls. The computer was programmed to examine creatures from other planets. These are brought to the study on Max's home planet and then typically the result of a time jump again at exactly the same time when they were come into the ship. However, human nature could this load may not withstand, so David was brought only eight years later, again on the earth.

However, Max has been damaged. He needs the information from David's brain in order to get back home to. After the computer has scanned David, it brings him back to his parents. But NASA and the police are already waiting outside the house. David realizes that he can never again live a normal life in this timeline. He would be permanently detained and investigated. Therefore, he asks Max to take the dangerous leap in time, even if it would cost his life.

David survived the time jump. And so he may, arrived in 1978, again, with his life. The memory of the adventure, however, was not cleared by Max.

" A skillful balance between emotion, suspense and comedy amusing sci-fi adventure, its technically superior effects never force themselves into the foreground. For young and old alike a pleasure working with sometimes pretty crazy ideas. "

Background

The Flight Of The Navigator is one of the first films in which the process of morphing was used to see in the scene where the spaceship changes its form, and in that in which David in the NASA Hall climbs on to the spaceship.

Remake

In May 2009, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney is preparing a remake of the film. In November 2012, announced that Disney has committed to the Director of Safety Not Guaranteed, Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly producers for recasting.
