Floirac (Lot)

Floirac is composed of several hamlets and farmsteads in southern France village with 282 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Lot in the Midi-Pyrénées region.

Location

Floirac located in the north of the Quercy and the department of Lot on the south bank of the Dordogne. Up to the canton capital Martel there are about ten kilometers ( route ) in a northwesterly direction. The medieval pilgrimage site of Rocamadour is located about 20 kilometers south.

Demographics

In the 19th century Floirac had at times almost 1,000 inhabitants; at the beginning of the 20th century, there were still about 700 agricultural mechanization and the resulting loss of jobs attended in the past for a significant population decline to the low point in the 1990s.

Economy

Floirac was and is still dominated by agriculture to a large extent, with the livestock (cattle, pigs, poultry) plays an important role. In autumn traditionally play truffles, nuts, chestnuts and fruit (apples, figs, etc. ) play an important role in providing people with food. Since the 1960s, tourism contributes in the form at the rental of holiday homes and apartments ( gîtes ) to the revenues of the place.

History

A parish church was first mentioned in the 10th century; Adhemar of Echelles they assumed last will and testament of the abbey of Tulle. In the 13th century, the Viscount of Turenne handed over the site to one of his followers. The Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) and in the Huguenot wars (1562-1598) suffered the ravages place.

Attractions

  • The Chapel of Saint -Roch is a simple building with a small bell gable and a late Gothic, crowned by an ogee arch, south portal of the 15th century. The chapel is recognized as a monument historique since 1925.
  • The present parish church ( Église Saint -Georges ) dates from the 18th century. The church impressed by a mighty west tower. The interior design was compiled in the 19th century. The church building is recognized as a monument historique since 1978.
  • Right next to the parish church is an imposing medieval guard and defensive tower.
  • A barn ( grange ) has been dated dendrochronological the 15th century. The apse of the building, however, it turns into a series of later buildings of the same kind in the region.
  • About the municipality distributed there are several megalithic megalithic tombs ( dolmen ).
