Flor Alpaerts

Flor Alpaerts ( born September 12, 1876 in Antwerp, † October 5, 1954 in Antwerp) was a Belgian conductor and composer.

Life

Alpaerts studied until 1901 at the Vlaamse Muziekschool in Antwerp ( the later Flemish Conservatory ), including harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he received a professorship for general music theory. Between 1919 and 1951 he conducted by the ' Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dier customer " Antwerp organized concerts, was artistic director of the " Fund Peter Benoit " and also conducted the choir " Arti Vocali ". As a conductor, he was not only in Belgium but also in other European countries, and made an important contribution to the dissemination of music of his Flemish homeland.

In the season 1922/1923 he directed (together with Arthur Steurbaut ), the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. From 1934 to 1941, Director of the Vlaamse Alpaerts Conservatorium.

Work

The music Alpaerts ' is colored partly impressionistic, but then also uses means of expressionism to turn to the neo-classicism in the late work.

Among the best known works Alpaerts ' is one of the four images by the Belgian painter James Ensor inspired Ensor Suite ( 1931). In his catalog of works by, while symphonic poems (about Pallieter, 1924), a violin concerto, a Poem for Flute and Orchestra, stage music, an opera ( Shylock, 1913), chamber music ( including four string quartets ), piano and vocal works.
