Floyd River

The Floyd River is a left tributary of the Missouri River. It has a length of 180 km and flows through the north-west of Iowa and finally empties into the Missouri River near Sioux City. The river was by Charles Floyd, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, named.

Course

The Floyd River has its origins in the northwestern O'Brien County near the town of Sanborn. From there it flows predominantly in a south-westerly direction through the county Sioux, Plymouth and Woodbury. He passed the places Sheldon, Hospers, Alton, Le Mars, Merrill and Hinton. At Merrill Floyd River takes its largest tributary, the approximately 65 km long West Branch Floyd River, on. The West Branch rises near Boyden in the northeast of Sioux County and flows südwarts passing through Plymouth County to Maurice and Struble. The Floyd River reached Woodbury County near Sioux City.

The Floyd River had repeatedly left its shores in the past and severe flooding in 1892 and 1953 caused in Sioux City. For this reason, the flow is at the center of high protection and river regulation.

In the Floyd River, it always comes back to fish deaths - caused by discharges of animal waste by slaughterhouses.
