Sheldon is an American city in the county O'Brien and Sioux, Iowa. Situated on the river Floyd River town has 5188 inhabitants ( 2010).

Sheldon was founded in 1872 and named after the railway employees Israel Sheldon. The place is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 18 to the Iowa Highway 60

Sheldon has a medical center, an airfield ( Sheldon Municipial Airport ( ICAO code: KSHL ) ), the Northwest Iowa Community College, a High Shool and several primary schools.

The city was briefly mentioned in two literary works: Jack Kerouac in On the Road (1957 ) (English: On the Road ) and in Tim O'Brien's If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home (1973).
