Football at the 1906 Intercalated Games

At the Olympic Games between 1906 a football tournament took place, which in turn had only demonstration or unofficial character. Four part mixed teams took part in the playout.

Denmark, which was considered at that time as the strongest continental European country, but still had no national, sent a Copenhagen city selection, which had nothing to do with the Dansk Boldspil Union but fell to a private initiative. For Greece, the team of Ethnikos GS Athenai participated, which was reinforced by a player Panellinios GS Athenai. From the Ottoman Empire took part in two teams. A team from Thessaloniki, which consisted entirely of players of the resident association Omilos Filomuson Thessalonica (the predecessor club Iraklis Thessaloniki ) and a team which took the name Smyrna and was composed of six French, five Englishmen and one Armenian.

All matches were played in Podilatodromio, at this point today is the Karaiskakis Stadium.

The tournament was clearly dominated by the Danish team that outclassed their opponents. In the final, northern Europeans have already led at halftime 9-0, whereupon the Athenians team refused to continue the game. Denmark was then declare the winner. The tournament committee decided that the three " Greek " teams should play for 2nd place. The Athenians also refused this because they had clearly already Thessaloniki defeated in the semifinals and were disqualified and placed on the last rank.
