Ford Duratec engine

Duratec is the name of various four-stroke gasoline engines, the car manufacturer Ford originally negotiated, it is merely to V6 engines that were introduced in 1994 with the Ford Mondeo. For marketing reasons, however, Ford began gradually to 2002, Europe all petrol engines in its models under the name Duratec distribute.

Duratec 24V

These six-cylinder engines, which therefore have two intake and exhaust valves, four-valve technology, contributed as first the name Duratec. The built up as a V- engine installations were first introduced in 1994 for the new Mondeo. With the introduction of the Mondeo top model ST220 engine was also available with three liters. With the introduction of the fourth generation of the Ford Mondeo in 2007, there was no current Ford model with Duratec 24V engine more.

Duratec -HE

The new Duratec was first introduced with the new Ford Mondeo in the fall of 2000 and since the second model generation of the Ford Focus Zetec -E engines which were finally replaced by the more modern Duratec HE. HE is an acronym for homogenous engine and freely translated means the world motor.

Ford at the time was the main shareholder in Mazda. The well-known in the Japanese carmaker as L engine or MZR engine has been taken over almost unchanged. The Duratec HE is a four cylinder in-line aluminum engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The valve mechanism via a timing chain, the auxiliary units are driven by a flat V-belt. In contrast to the Zetec -R sitting in the Duratec HE is the inlet side in the direction seen the front of the engine. For the European market the engine was available with an engine capacity from 1.8 to 2.3 liters, the engine in America was also available with a displacement of 2.5 liters.

The engine was available with 1.8 -liter displacement as a flexi-fuel variant in the Focus and Mondeo at the factory. These motors can be operated with standard gasoline and ethanol fuel (E85 ). Later this engine was replaced by the 2.0 liter, which is now available on the Mondeo, S -Max and Galaxy. The motor and the motor controller are specially designed to run on ethanol, any mixing ratio between gasoline and ethanol is possible. It is only used, a fuel tank, the mixing ratio is determined by sensors. For the Focus now comes the 1.6 liter TI- VCT engine as flexifuel used.

Another variant of the engine with 1.8 liter displacement is equipped with gasoline direct injection. The " Duratec SCi " injection system ( Smart Charge injection) was developed in close cooperation with Robert Bosch GmbH. The central element is a single-cylinder high -pressure injection pump ( HDP2 ) with flow control, which is driven by the intake camshaft and injects the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Using this engine was only in the Ford Mondeo.

With the introduction of the EcoBoost technology, the engines have been further developed and are, apart from the FFV version, from now on only with turbocharging and direct injection available.

Duratec 20V

This 2.5 - liter inline five-cylinder comes, like the Duratec -HE, not from the development of Ford, but has been included in current production by Volvo. To get powerful, durable and reasonably compact engines and to save development costs, the tested engines from Volvo were used. Initially these were only in the ST model of the second -generation Ford Focus with 166 kW ( 225 hp), later the engine was 147 kW ( 200 hp ) or 162 kW (220 hp) in the Ford Mondeo, Ford S -MAX and Ford Kuga offered. After the facelift of the second generation model of the Focus, the performance of the engine for the new Focus RS to 224 kW ( 305 hp ) was increased in the limited special edition Focus RS500 even to 257 kW ( 350 hp).

Since the introduction of EcoBoost engines, in-line five -cylinder engines in Ford models are no longer available.

Zetec -E

The Zetec -E engines were completely replaced in 2004 with the introduction of the new Ford Focus with the new Duratec HE engines. The Duratec name was not introduced in the first model of the Focus, the 2.0 -liter turbocharged engine of the Focus RS has been called Duratec RS 2.0- liter naturally aspirated engine of the Focus ST170 Duratec as ST. Both engines are revised versions of the Zetec -E.

Zetec -SE

As of 2002, the Zetec -SE engines were sold exclusively under the name Duratec, but in the technology changed nothing. As of 2004, the engine in the Ford Focus with double camshaft adjustment Ti - VCT ( Twin independent Variable Cam Timing) was available.

Some of the new EcoBoost engines are based on the technology of the Zetec -SE. However, while the Duratec HE is no longer required, the Zetec -SE will still be produced.

Duratec 8V

Under the name Duratec 8V Ford drove the Zetec Rocam developed by Ford Brazil as a cheaper version of the Zetec -SE in 2000. Available was the engine from 2003 to 2008 in the Ka and Fiesta, as well as in the Ford Streetka.

1.2 Duratec 8V

Even the four-cylinder engine from Fiat, which is installed in the second generation model of the Ford Ka is marketed under the name Duratec.

Using ( Europe)

In addition to these current Ford models Duratec engines were installed in the models Maverick, Cougar and Streetka.
