Forum Clodii

Forum Clodii was an ancient Roman city in southern Etruria. She lay on the Via Clodia on the western shore of Lake Bracciano.

It was localized by finds of inscriptions, including a stone with a dedication for Lucius Licinius Julian on which the name of the city is explicitly mentioned in the Romanesque church of San Liberato north of Bracciano. The church contains numerous ancient spolia, which could come from the city.

Forum Clodii 313 is mentioned as a bishopric. Already 649 appears in its place the reference to the Episcopus Manturanensis, suggesting that the bishop's seat was moved to the present Canale Monterano. Maybe forum Clodii was 573 destroyed by the Lombards and gave up after that.

On the extinct bishopric in forum Clodii the titular Forum Clodii goes back to the Roman Catholic Church.
