Fountains of Wayne

Fountains of Wayne is an American indie rock band that was founded in 1995.

History

The band was founded by Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood. The two met at the college know and soon played together in alternating bands. In the meantime, they went their separate ways, but met the mid-1990s and formed Fountains of Wayne again. A demo tape eventually earned them a contract with Atlantic Records. In 1996, she released her debut album, also called Fountains of Wayne. Two singles, Radiation Vibe and Sink To The Bottom, were relatively successful radio hits. But it was the title song That Thing You Do! the film of the same name was the breakthrough: Schlesinger's song was honored with an Oscar nomination and a Gold Certificate from the RIAA.

Together with guitarist Jody Porter and drummer Brian Young, the two went on a world tour, often as a backing band for artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins, The Lemonheads and others.

After the debut album about 125,000 copies had been sold, in 1999 came a new album titled Utopia Parkway out, named after a road on Long Iceland, New York. The album went in the direction of a concept album, and was about the life in today's suburban neighborhoods. The album received favorable reviews. However, it sold as its predecessor rather slow, and the singles were not hit. The band went on extended tour, but the resentment between her and the label grew, as management did not understand it, the single Troubled Times to promote reasonable. End of 1999, Atlantic announced the contract.

The band broke up once, its future seemed uncertain. Schlesinger found work as a songwriter and producer and wrote many of the songs of the movie Josie and the Pussycats with. He also produced albums for Verve Pipe, David Meade and They Might Be Giants.

From 2001, the band was back together slowly. Recordings for a cover of the Kinks song Better Things for the tribute album This Is Where I Belong: Songs of Ray Davies and the Kinks and other projects finally brought enough money to record a new album.

In 2003 the band signed with S- Curve Records, a subsidiary of Virgin Records, and released the album Welcome Interstate Managers. The album was a surprise hit and sold reasonably well. The single released Stacy 's Mom got the gold certificate from the RIAA. The following single Mexican Wine fared because of a controversial video - the chorus ... think I'll have another glass of Mexican Wine was sung by children - not good. The third single, Hey Julie, brought it back to some airplay.

In June 2005, published Fountains of Wayne on the album Out Of State Plates, a collection with all previously released B-sides, previously unreleased songs and two new tracks The Girl I Can not Forget and Maureen. The latter appeared as a promotional single was, therefore being heard on American radio, but not available for purchase.

Tell Me What You Already Did the soundtrack to the film Robots even made it on the list of 42 songs for an Oscar nomination came into question in 2006. However, it did not come to a nomination.

On 3 April 2007 the fifth album Traffic and Weather appeared. In 2009, Fountains of Wayne gave some concerts during which they played new songs from their next, yet unreleased album. According to band member Chris Collingwood, the album is already completed, but because the band could not produce a record deal, the first work remained unpublished. 2011 appeared the new album Sky Full of Holes.
