Fra Mauro (crater)

96.76

Fra Mauro is an impact crater on the Earth's moon with a diameter of 95 km. It is located in the center of the Fra -Mauro formation, northeast of Mare Cognitum and southeast of the Mare Insularum. The southern edge of the Fra Mauro crater - shared with the younger moon craters Bonpland and Parry, making the southern crater wall is curved in the Fra -Mauro crater into it.

The still remaining crater rim was highly fissured by later meteor impacts, with larger openings to the north and east. The highest point of the crater walls is 700 meters. Since the crater is strong overall eingerumpft, he is also known as "Fra -Mauro highlands ".

The crater floor is covered by basaltic lava. The surface of the soil is crossed by north-south running clefts. The crater has no central hill.

Apollo missions

Fra Mauro was originally intended as a landing place for the failed Apollo 13 mission. The landing area in the northern part of Fra Mauro was then assigned to Apollo 14. During the mission there breccias were collected, which were deposited by the Imbrium impact on parts of the Fra -Mauro crater. This partly composed of coarse debris blankets are also known as "Fra -Mauro formation ."

Origin of the name

The Fra -Mauro crater was named after the Venetian monk and cartographer Fra Mauro.
