Francesco Alciati

Francesco Alciati ( born February 2, 1522 Milan, † April 20, 1580 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. Alciati was a relative, but not nephew, as is to read sometimes, the humanist Andrea Alciati and became his heir and successor at the University of Pavia from 1550 to 1560.

He studied in Bologna, where he heard Ugo Boncompagni, who was appointed at the same time with him a cardinal, and after graduation in both right hand he went to Pavia, where he was trained by Andrea Alciato. Among his fellow students included Reginald Pole, Alessandro Farnese, Cristoforo Madruzzo and Otto Steward of Waldburg. In Pavia Alciati maintained friendly relations with Girolamo Cardano, for whose call to Bologna in 1562, he campaigned and his various writings dedicated and the Kardinal certain executor. In Pavia Alciati Carlo Borromeo taught in law and was one of his closest collaborators. Alciati was a member of the Roman Curia. Pope Pius IV appointed him on March 12, 1565 cardinal of the titular church of Santa Susanna. His tomb is located in the Roman church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
