Francesco Granacci

Francesco d' Andrea di Marco Granacci (* 1469 in Villa Magna, † November 30, 1543 in Florence ) was a painter of the Italian Renaissance and life-long friend of Michelangelo. He is mentioned in biographies of Giorgio Vasari.

Life

Granacci artistic career began in the mid- 1480s probably, when he joined as an apprentice in the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio. There he also met Michelangelo, who should remain to him a lifelong friend. As an assistant, he participated in the workshop several times to the images of his master. For example, he helped on the frescoes in San Marco, which had been commissioned by Lorenzo de ' Medici in order. As then the sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni, a pupil of Donatello, sculptor apprentices for his garden at San Marco was looking for, moved the young Granacci along with Michelangelo, who felt more attracted by nature of the sculpture, in whose workshop about.

After completing his training as a sculptor to Granacci turned by both learned techniques of fresco painting and sculpture, from, and the tempera and oil painting began to dedicate. Back in Florence was born in the same year is a Madonna with Child and Saints Francis and Jerome for the Augustinian convent of San Gallo.

After the stay in Rome Granacci style began to change: To have a number of images that emerged after his return to Florence, a mannerist influence, which is most likely due to Michelangelo. Work of the years 1520 - 1525, however, approach to the style of Fra Bartolomeo.

As Granacci died in 1543, he was buried in the church of Sant ' Ambrogio in Florence.
